The Ohio Radiation Advisory Council (RAC) met on October,18, 2024 at the Ohio Department of Health (ODH). The OSRT consistently attends these meetings to continue to monitor actions that impact the Radiologic Sciences profession. While a wide range of topics were reported by ODH staff (NRC Agreement State Program, Radiological Health and Safety Section, and Environmental Health), it is the X-ray Program that has the most impact on our practice in Ohio.

ODH RULES IMPACTING THE PRACTICE OF RADIOLOGY

  • Medical Radiation Generating Equipment (3701:1-66 ) has proceeded to the Legislative rule oversight committee (JCARR) and should be approved soon.
  • External Beam Radiation Therapy Equipment Chapter (3701:1-67) has been posted for public comments which will be reviewed by the Ohio Department of Health and Radiation Generating Committee (REC) at their meeting on November 15.
  • Radiologic Licensure chapter (3701-72) has been approved by ODH's REC committee and are now with legal for review.

GXMO EXAM REVIEW COMMITTEE

  • The GXMO Exam Syllabus (placed as an appendix of the Radiologic License rules) has been updated to reflect current practices. The revised syllabus is going through the approval process to post on the ODH website. The Exam Committee is writing additional questions to add to the test bank.

X-RAY INSPECTION PILOT PROGRAM

  • A voluntary pilot program was started for ODH inspections. This program allows inspectors to gather inspection documents from the facility for review prior to the physical site visit. The process will cut down on the time ODH is physically at the inspection sites and will be less disruptive to the facility’s daily operation.

GENERAL UPDATES

  • There were no medical events reported this quarter
  • ODH has renewed its MQSA contract to allow continued inspections of mammography facilities.
  • Questions are being raised by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections about the current limitations in the use of security screening devices in correctional facilities.

Not only is OSRT represented at the RAC meetings, it has voting representation on the REC in the specialties of Radiography, CT, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy. The REC is the committee that revises the Radiologic Licensure rules, so having representative seats at the table is critical for the profession in Ohio. OSRT is also actively involved in the revisions to the GXMO curriculum and test items.

OSRT continues to work hard to represent all Ohio Radiologic Science professionals and our patients. THE OSRT IS YOUR VOICE!
