January 8, 2010 FDA Makes Interim Recommendations to Address Concern of Excess Radiation Exposure During CT Perfusion Imaging
The Food and Drug Administration has issued interim recommendations for imaging facilities, radiologists, and radiologic technologists to help prevent additional cases of excess radiation exposure. These recommendations apply to all CT perfusion images including brain and heart, because they use similar procedures and protocols. Ohio Ohio’s radiation protection regulations already require quality control mechanisms and the use of “As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA)” principles for delivering patient dose for all patient protocols in CT. Also, procedures have been implemented for inspectors to place primary focus on CT perfusion protocols during inspection. This proactive approach should prove beneficial to Ohio citizens. Ohio is ready to participate when the FDA and Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD) move forward to collect research data for the development of further recommendations for CT perfusion imaging.
